Twas Beautiful

Up at 430 am to watch the foggy Geiranger fjord at sunrise. It was worth it. Climbed the mountain to see the full extent of one of the deepest fjords in the world. It was worth it. Saw trolls, glacier lakes, beautiful waterfalls. My travel hunger is satiated for today. Norway is beautiful! 😍

Annual Trail Rides: 80/200 On this special trail I got an unexpected surprise of riding with a fellow boarder and kindred spirit. We dont ride very often together (maybe once every two years) because she usually rides with her friends who walk the whole way. But on this day, she offered and I accepted. She took her OTTB and off we went. We trotted, cantered and there was a stretch of a hand gallop too. She was exhilarated about how much fun it was to do more than walk. And I was exhilarated by that hand gallop. Q got a little strong at that point and just blew through my aids in order to match pace with that pretty chestnut mare. She sure was pretty! I celebrated this milestone by forgoing our trail the next day in favour of a walk in the woods accompanied by my husband. It was hot, bugs were out, and I was tired when I got home. Mornings in the mist

Some glorious footing these last few days as we got a recent snowfall then a series of warm days. Makes for slushy footing and perfect for cantaloping. I was surprised to see some fellow boarders stick to the indoor arena, but everyone has a slightly different definition of perfect footing. My slowly greying horse is still very black in the legs, so wet sand and mud splatter does not bother me at all. Some folks consider any footing that might dirty their horses legs to be inappropriate. Both Q and I are always keen to go on the trails, so I restrict our outdoor riding only when it is unsafe (ice, heavy winds, hail). It is our plight as barefooters to be constantly aware of footing and I am relatively prudent when it comes to risks of soft tissue injuries.  As barefooters though, we are fairly well equipped most of the year. Q has plenty of natural grip in mud, slush and those in betweens. But when the arctic freeze hits the wet tracks, we slump our shoulders and head to the indoor...

The pressure of time on my productivity

I once heard that retirement means that weekends don’t mean the same thing anymore. No more cramming all the chores, shopping and social events into a 48 hour period. Every day feels like the weekend. And the impact is that the pressure of time, and productivity, is lost in the equation. Our COVID constraints and self quarantine have also meant that time has lost a key measurement. So every day, every week has felt the same. Why not procrastinate if it doesn’t really matter? As I have been back at the barn almost every day this week, I have noticed that the pressure of time has returned. And my productivity has skyrocketed this week. So not only do I have less available hours to do the work I have to do, but I have doubled my output at the same time. I did some long and slow rides this week, legging my Q back again. The guilt is real

A few days ago the government allowed for horse owners to have limited, scheduled, controlled access to their horses for the first time in six weeks. Heavy biosecurity protocol was enforced and everyone was asked to stay 50 feet away from each other. I showed up at my barn to find a chubby, happy and freshly shampooed Q who was excited to see what treats I brought for him. My barn owner greeted me with a smile and a bucket of suds and sponge to wipe down anything I touched.  I had a nice handwalk in the woods on my first day, and then on the second day a quick ride to find my buddy winded after a few minutes (that has never happened) despite his being lunged at least twice a week while I was gone. And we did a short stroll in the woods. Q had a nice spring in his step for his first trips off the property. It was awesome. But I felt so guilty at being happy. Annual Trail Rides: 34/200 A century ago, local farmers in our town west of Montreal were tired of the sand left in the spring thaw that clogged the streets and ditches and created floods and ice dams to prevent passing. So the farmers got together with the town and the province to fund a reforestation project which we would later call the "Nursery". The reforestation would cover most of the old sand dunes that had been left behind many millennia ago by a retreating glacier. The old sand dunes were a popular place for local families to go for a picnic, or some fishing in some of the creeks and lakes that popped up from underground springs. Our history books show groups of families with their farmhorses pulling big sleighs or wagons filled with children.
