Polar Vortex

Its super stupid cold today at -30C, so its a “stay home and make soup” day. Italian wedding soup to be exact, and its coming together deliciously. Had some good rides this week, and after a good old fashioned free lunge and buck around session Q was an absolute mellow angel and we got back to loping all over the trail network.

Big snowstorm is coming on Monday which might, hopefully, dump a foot of fresh snow. So Ill look forward to cracking open some new trails this week.

Got back to Buenos Aires at 2 am this morning, after a week at the southern tip of South America in the borderlands of Chile and Argentina in the Los Glaciares National Park. Stunning scenery, rustic outposts of the neighboring sheep farm where we cooked meals on wood fires and slept in shacks barely protected from the howling winds blowing down the Dickson and Perito Moreno Glaciars. My little firecracker of a criollo mare Achicoria was stupendous. We herded wild cattle and scrambled over rocks, logs, and steep descents in between long gallops. I took a nap in a glacier field between the Calafate Berry Bushes and the wild grasses, drank mate and learned how to make empanadas with my guide Juani. To say the trip was epic is a disservice. The hidden gait

I had a plan. My horse had another. I wanted to canter. My horse wanted to bolt, spook, and gallop! So we trotted and cantered up hills and across trails until the poor guy was winded. I let him walk and catch his breath, which of course is a little challenging when he is still jigging. I thought he had calmed down and we could start practicing canter transitions when a pheasant startled in the bush. Poor Q was wired! So we kept on trotting until finally 10 minutes later he asked to walk. I got this little clip after thirty minutes of trotting and just before he asked to walk. He is looking a little sedate, finally. Eventually I got to do some canter work on a wider stretch of the trail. At first the circles were ovals but eventually Q figured out my game.  Which got me thinking ... will I ever gallop? My old timer cowboy trainer told me many moons ago to be very careful about never “opening up” my QH on trail. So we kept our speed to hand gallops in closed spaces. But many trainer...

The ladder of trust

A new year. Paradise gone, now its curfew, confinement and constraints in the land of cold and dark. Death notices of friends are rolling in. Not covid related, but massive heart attacks way too young. Another reminder to embrace every moment. Carpe Diem. The trip home was eventful with flight cancellations and a sense of feeling stranded in a sea of panic. But it all turned out ok, with my husband the ever flexible planner in emergencies. He found us a red eye flight on an empty plane which allowed me to stretch out across three seats and literally take a nap on the way home.  Today I made it to the barn, with a blanket of fresh snow. When my Q got over his surprise at seeing me after 5 weeks, all he wanted was a proper ear scratch. The one place on his body he wont let anyone else touch. He was groomed and lunged while I was gone, but was happy to get some love. I dont usually ride my first day out after a long absence as Q usually needs some bonding and connection time to regain...

Annual Trail Rides: 207/200 (Bareback 31/40) Ive been struggling this week with my bruised ribs. Im struggling to sleep because every move hurts. Getting up hurts. Opening doors hurts. Sitting down hurts. Pushing a 35lb saddle on my 16 hand horse? 😂 Today I bundled up for a quiet ride with my horse thinking I would just go for a short walk. My horse was feeling fresh. I was not. Every step hurt. My horse wanted to spook at a stump that had a ray of sunshine. I did not. I dragged myself back, got off, and decided there would be no more rides until I am feeling better. Its too difficult to ride a fresh horse when you aren’t feeling 100%. Your body becomes tight and tentative, bracing for pain. Your breathing becomes shallow. Just no fun. So that might be the last one for 2021, but its been a pretty solid year! In two weeks its off to sunny weather and hopefully lots of therapeutic ocean bathing!

Zero degrees of consequences

Annual Trail Rides: 24/200 After our arctic chill week, we had a nice blizzard blow in that made me a shut-in for 3 days. My horse Q got his daily turnout with his friends but didn’t do much aside from standing around and whipping his big buddy Chester with a stick. Chester is the alpha in this herd but Q loves to use him as protection from the silly bully in the group. Nobody wants to play with the silly bully, so Chester gets used as defense a lot. The plan on Friday was to enjoy the balmy 0C weather for a more adventurous ride of crossing the big field (a treacherous feat in -20C with windchill), cross the road and into another trail sector to visit a long time friend we haven’t seen in a year. Normally this plan is no big deal. Im not a fan of going far when alone, especially in winter. But this time I had a buddy. So it should be no big deal. I warned of snowdrifts in the big field, and that the footing might not help our plan. Caveats aside, we set a time for our Friday departure...
