Riding is down ⬇️

Dog training is ⬆️. Our little bichon puppy is now 10 months old and is a confirmed lap dog, but also a certified trick dog, and novice in scent tracking, agility (no jumping), and has started swimming lessons. We have definitely double downed on lessons and training at home.

As a result, its been harder to fit in the riding and the worsened commute to the barn (now 2.5/3hrs round trip) as a result of road construction. But when I show up, Q is happy to provide kisses and look for carrots. He has been a good egg in my 1-2x a week habit. Big changes have happened at the barn where resident trainer was kicked out and we went to a coop style management, with double the turnout. Everyone seems happier.

What hasn’t changed is how Q continues to be my greatest muse. He makes me giggle and happy cry almost every ride (when solo). There is just an incredible emotional resonance with this horse. Such joy.

The gross hot weather of the summer now seems to be over, and Im hopeful for more riding in the near future.

Annual Trail Rides: 180/200 (Bareback: 24/40) Rode three times today including one drill team practice in the arena which was a surprise and novelty as I have not ridden inside in 6+ months. I started out with a quiet bareback hack around the woods, following our fearless leader as she begins rehab on her pretty boy. The barn crew was supposed to head out to a local show next month and this morning was going to be a practice flat class. My intention was to join them as a whirling dervish and do the silly things that silly riders do in competition (pass too close, cut you off, ride too slow) so that the newbies could be better prepared for the silliness of a hack class. But it seems that the show might be canceled so they converted practice to a drill team practice and it was tons of fun. My Q was pretty darn good and precise and malleable for a horse with very little ring time. We ended with a cool down trail ride and thats a wrap for the 18th milestone of this series.

Double Trouble

Annual Trail Rides: 38/200 I made the mistake (?) during a Monday Blues episode to complain about being bored on my trail rides. Blasphemy with our incredible footing and increasingly mild and sunny days where we have regular unfettered access to our winter wonderland. And my horse has been just amazing these last rides. But sigh, you can not rationalize boredom away. So fellow boarder C (an international concert violinist, first chair and all) offered to tag along with me on her still somewhat insecure 17h Hanoverian hunter. And then BO asked to have me to babysit her baby stud on his first ridden trail ride (he has been ponied in these woods aplenty). So I got two trail rides today, each very different. In the first, I coached C on how to ask for a canter on her leggy beast with the 12 foot hunter stride while staying behind my andalusians 7 foot cantalope stride. Life lessons from my horse: Hold on señorita, Ill protect you! Its been a rough few weeks work wise. More work than I can handle, conflict and temper tantrums from graduate students, and an emergency bathroom renovation, along with preparations for the revival (after a 3 year pandemic hiatus) of the biggest St Patricks Day house party … well Im teetering somewhere between high anxiety and anger with a heavy dose of insomnia. Not good. Ive been trying to ride a few times a week but certainly not as often as usual, and my trips are short and abrupt. 45 mins, WTC, mostly solo. Grooming, thats for sissies. 😉 Yesterday, my horse was a tool. He tried to attack my friends horse as she passed me (albeit a bit too close), he tried to bolt when a cross country skier was crossing behind, he reared when the sleigh crossed our path with the double team, and he was just crabby and ears pinned whenever anything came nearby. Quaint Krakow

We arrived in Krakow on a super short commuter flight from Budapest and spent most of the weekend wandering about the charming town, constantly watching out for rogue trams that want to run us over. Our first afternoon was a delightful stop in the large market square to sit on a terrace, drink local beer, eat a lovely plate of cured sausages and meats with a kickass fresh horseradish purée, and watch the parade go by on National Constitution Day. Somehow, we often arrive in a new city on their national holiday. Krakow town square and basilica In the town square, m any fine carriages and horses are in line, with beautiful women in black hats with white ribbons driving the carriages. Its so unusual to see only women driving so many large carriages, that I took notice. At first, I thought it was because of the parade. Annual Trail Rides: 70/200 Well the warm and sunny weather came back but we had to endure two days of heavy wind that spook the bajesus out of me when riding in the woods. Q was great and hot to trot. Much energy and spunk, which had me riding with my legs off. Just a hint of an upward transition and he was off like a flash. The big happy news is that fellow trail buddy C (our summer intern last year) is back, hopefully! We had our first ride together in over 7 months and it was glorious. We caught up on all the changes in her young 21 year life, and I shared my latest anecdotes. When you add on decades, the life changes are small and incremental. But when you are just staring your adult path, the roller coaster of reversals and stops and starts are much more exciting. So we headed out on a massive long trail with lots of beautiful speedy trots, and I quickly realized I was way overdressed with my hoodie.
