Back in the saddle

After a week grinding away at work, it was time for some rejuvenation with springlike weather, blue skies, and fabulous footing! Crazy but true, we were one of the only ones out.


We were supposed to only go out for a little hour. But it was just so beautiful with a light dusting of fresh snow that we stayed out for nearly 2 hours!! And, my toes weren’t cold!

Just enough spice

Its been a rough go these last few weeks between a significant increase in work, brutal cold snaps, icy trails and skating rink parking lots. Ive only ridden a handful of times on those rare occasions where the universe converged. This has made for a spicy pony and while it makes me more prudent on how I engage in speed when the brakes are fairly absent, it also makes me super appreciative that this spicy horse does keep his excitement under wraps most of the time. Clearly Q is fit and feeling good, and his daily turnout with bestie Chester is absolutely insufficient in expending energy. Canter Protocol

I do lots of different kinds of rides, with lots of different kinds of riders. But cantering always has me stumped. I have an established checklist of rules, but not everybody shares my view on this. Here is the short version I do not ride on trail with anybody who is not comfortable cantering their horse (at least in an arena). I don't want their first canter experience to be the spook and bolt when their horse sees a deer. I will occasionally make an exception to this rule for very short and controlled trail rides within proximity to the barn. I do not race. The order we start in, must be maintained until the end. No passing. With some of my trail buddies we will canter side by side, and it is glorious! I do not gallop. I have made a few exceptions to this rule with individuals that I trust, and on a trail I know well. The gallop stretch never lasts very long. Challenging my assumptions, the mounted police way

Some interesting developments on the despooking clinic. Full disclosure, I write this from the comfort of my sofa, with heating pad and anti-inflammatories. My back pain reared its ugly head this week and after three hours of riding and walking, I was d.o.n.e. Having done obstacle training before I had a certain approach down pat. Introduce obstacle from the ground, ensure the horse respects your space, and reward every try. But do not let the obstacle be ignored. This is not a negotiation. Eventually the confidence builds and each new obstacle becomes easier. But most new obstacles are introduced from the ground. Here, it was very different. First the context. A smallish arena (60x120ft) with the back door opened for auditors, housed under a temporary shelter with tarp cover. Hellish gusty wind blowing through the tarp. 11 horses and handlers, most of which were hot, reactive, and lacked training. Lilac Season

Annual Trail Rides: 88/200 It was a busy riding week, getting out on the trails every day. Boy does it make a difference with Q who is increasingly soft and attentive. Im trying to ride with more intention of the pace within the gait I seek, and Q is confirming that he is listening. Ive been edging him into a slower lope without the reins and we break into a trot pretty often, which tells me Im on the right track. I finished Rashid book #4 this week, and it was another good one! (Good horses are never a bad colour) The side effect has been that I now want to buy another young horse to start. Its a ludicrous idea given the cost of board (which, by the way, just went up 20%) and is probably just a consequence of being a little bored and sheltered. Once “real life” gets going again Ill be back to barely having time for my wonderful Q. Today was a lovely ride to my annual pilgrimage of the wild lilacs. Stuck at a max speed of 19 km/hour

It was a funny weather day. One minute black skies, next minute blue skies. I decided to abort my longer trail plans and stick close to home in case of thunder and lightening. Every time I would turn away from home the skies would darken. I did a pretty fast ride but am unimpressed by my stats, both average and max speed. I felt like my canter was pretty fast but it seems no faster than a good trot. Hmm. Im starting to think that I might have lost my mojo on my last fall and have returned to more conservative riding again. Hmmm. Well it was a humid day so we were both in a sweat when we returned. Q was happy to get a shower and some grazing. I was happy to end the day in my hammock. Tomorrow, a return to bareback in my new best friends pad.
