Annual Trail Rides: 39/200

Inching up on the second milestone of 20% of my goal, I have been plagued by boredom and repetition on the trail these last few weeks which always seems to be worse on Mondays. I had some good fun this week with fellow boarder C and BO which definitely changed things up a bit. Q has enjoyed testing his boundaries with me as is evidenced by these big bully ears.


BO hit some amazing milestones yesterday with her first trot on trail and canter (by mistake, but whatever!) on her baby stud. We started the first trot by having baby stud follow Q on a narrow winding trail to remove some of his "options". These two are paddock buddies and party hard when they are together so the biggest thing we were worried about was that the two would get silly and start boxing like they do during playtime. But that didn't happen.

What did happen, during trot #1 was that baby stud got a little excited and was almost on Q's bum, which had the BO holding him back and then he got really frustrated so he started cantering and hopping. Q was completely oblivious to what was going on and didn't even flinch an ear at the shenanigans in the back. I kept checking in as I could hear the BO laugh, and exclaim, and talk to her baby stud, and then giggle again. She told me to just keep on going and baby stud would work it out. As a result she got to sit her first canter which is really cool and she commented about what a smooth trot and canter he has. 

Baby stud was so brave and courageous that I suggested that she ask him to lead the next section, which he did so brilliantly that she then prompted our trot #2 and he was amazing!!! This little stud literally dances in his trot and you should see his bum swing. In fact, it encouraged me to download the tiktok app and play around with some of my videos paired up with music. We then proceeded to trot #3 on the wider trails and again he was amazing. We saw a sleigh, crossed a few other riders, saw some skiers and had lots of snow dumping down from the tree tops on us with branch debris. All that to say that even for a mid-week quiet ride, baby stud got lots of good exposure and was not perturbed by any of it.

It has been a fun deep dive into this funny world of short videos and Im enjoying it, so I did a few more too. Here they are for posterity in my blog and maybe somebody might enjoy them too. Sound on.

There is a wonderful veterinarian-turned-acupuncturist that works in our area, and Q gets an exam and sometimes a treatment once every six months. With our latest saddle restuffing, I thought it was good timing to take a look. This lovely older gentleman has over 30 years of equine acupuncture practice (in addition to 20 years as an equine vet) and many a story to tell but the biggest stories come from his patients and his magic hands. While I have never tried acupuncture on myself, I have been successfully treated for many ailments with osteopathy and I believe in the body as a system that can often heal itself. So today was the day, and I watched him do several treatments before it was our turn. Q had no back pain or soreness, but his weakness in the left hind was flaring up and probably connected with the increased work on collection over the last few weeks. Come ride with me, in five sections

I thought I would share some pics and video from our trail system that surrounds our barn. Known as one of the best places to ride in Eastern Canada with 300 square miles of trails in natural woodlands on protected, municipal and private land. Our surrounding land owners contribute to almost 60% of the trail network and we are forever grateful. Q wondering why we are stopping... In the winter time we share the trails with x-country skiers (they have their own trails that intersect ours) and skidoos, and atv bikes and joggers/hikers all year long. The motorized vehicules have their own trails, but they intersect ours. And of course on private land, we might encounter anything from atvs, fat bikes, dog sleds, etc. The network is split into five sections and Ive become familiar with all of them after riding on these trails for almost 30 years. Gloomy November

I feel like I am in good company when I say that life and work has taken me away from riding these last few weeks. I finally made it back to the barn during an epic windstorm with over 1,000,000 homes without power. No surprise that I didnt ride that day. I did make it out to the woods yesterday for my first time in two weeks and boy has the scenery changed. From golden colors to barren trees, from sandy trails to muddy bogs, from blue skies to hail storms. It’s time to be well dressed, with jackets, gloves, and good socks. I have been dutifully practicing the long reins every day for 15 minutes, and Q is a quick study. We now do nice transitions between collected walk to collected trot, and during one of our teardrop turns Q offered me a leg yield to my squeal and delight. He stopped and raised his head to me, saying that if I was going to squeal that much he deserved a mint. I obliged. He also taught me a lesson today. Anomalies of Argentina, Part 2

What a funny country. Somewhere stuck with one foot in the past and a delusion of the future. No wonder they have the highest number of psychiatrists per capita in the world. They seem to suffer from fatalism, and its contagious. Being a huge metropolitan city of 15M, public transit (and subways) are the backbone of transportation. While taxis are very cheap (2$ for a 15 minute ride), transit is even cheaper at 0.10$ and abundant for us as we are downtown. With rampant inflation and deflating currency, the government wisely decided years ago to remove cash payment and replace with a transit pay-as-you-go card called a SUBE. That way they could increase prices on a monthly basis and it would be seamless. But finding a place that will sell you the card? Turns out, thats the problem. For locals, its no big deal since they keep the cards forever. But tourists? Good luck. I had heard echos of this problem online, particularly exasperated by the pandemic. Preparing Patagonia

I may come to regret this, but Im not as prepared for this trip as I was for Alberta’s epic trek last spring. In part because I havent ridden in 3 weeks. 😃 The days will probably be shorter (4-6 hours of riding) and its pretty slow riding because its over glacier rocks …. so maybe Ill be fine? Also looks like its just gonna be me and the gauchos as the other riders had flights cancelled last minute. So this trip will be Spanish (actually Castellano) immersion too. The last few weeks in BA has been momentous, from the run to the final of the World Cup, to the dozens of people who ran in the streets in defense of a small dog in a hit and run, to the amazing fresh fruit and vegetables, to the delicious food and mountains of gelato. BA is big, at times wild, messy and very passionate. I havent found much indifference here. But now, I have to figure out how to get my backpack to weigh less than 8 kg to fit all the clothes I need for weather ranging from polar sun to blizzard. Yes, I have l
