Here comes the rain again ☔️

Freezing rain that is. A projected 12 hours of freezing rain to begin soon, and then an arctic cold to freeze it in place. 🥶 For several days.

So I am now sheltering in place. That is a common term for 2020!

I did manage to get out for a nice solo ride yesterday after a busy day of working. I was feeling the “carpe diem” spirit and did not want to miss my chance for one last hoorah before the freeze settles in. The footing wasn’t perfect but good enough for trotting and a little cantering.

We need snow.

Until then, here are some pics from our last ride, including a decorated xmas tree we found along the way. And a little video that shows what it feels like to be directed by your horse. My camera literally follows his gaze. Unintentionally I might add.

Our five-week European escapade is now coming to a close and I look forward to the return to normal that is my bed, my kitchen, my routine. As I reflect on all that we experienced on this trip, it is clear that even I, a self-proclaimed expert in change management, struggle with disruption in my life. Each new destination would have me grumpy and fussy for the first 24 hours as I shifted to a new living situation almost every five days. Q gets acupuncture

There is a wonderful veterinarian-turned-acupuncturist that works in our area, and Q gets an exam and sometimes a treatment once every six months. With our latest saddle restuffing, I thought it was good timing to take a look. This lovely older gentleman has over 30 years of equine acupuncture practice (in addition to 20 years as an equine vet) and many a story to tell but the biggest stories come from his patients and his magic hands. While I have never tried acupuncture on myself, I have been successfully treated for many ailments with osteopathy and I believe in the body as a system that can often heal itself. So today was the day, and I watched him do several treatments before it was our turn. Q had no back pain or soreness, but his weakness in the left hind was flaring up and probably connected with the increased work on collection over the last few weeks. Annual Trail Rides: 34/200 A century ago, local farmers in our town west of Montreal were tired of the sand left in the spring thaw that clogged the streets and ditches and created floods and ice dams to prevent passing. So the farmers got together with the town and the province to fund a reforestation project which we would later call the "Nursery". The reforestation would cover most of the old sand dunes that had been left behind many millennia ago by a retreating glacier. The old sand dunes were a popular place for local families to go for a picnic, or some fishing in some of the creeks and lakes that popped up from underground springs. When my legs say GO but my butt says NO

Q struggles with tires, balls, tarps and all objects that are unnatural. He is not a big fan of plastic bags but since carrots come in plastic bags he has learned to be more curious than fearful. Back in 2016, when we were starting out with groundwork I was convinced he could plow through a set of old tires just like the Missouri Foxtrotters do. We tried but we had more fails than success, and then I got distracted by the next shiny thing. So we never mastered tires. Certainly not like this pretty mare at minute 3:42. Amazing! And backwards 😱! So when I came into the ring one day and saw a short stack of tires, I thought “cool, lets see what what Q thinks about that”! He was a little “looky” that day as there were many new obstacles around and the barn crew was replacing the gate with a set of powertools. Happy 8th Birthday Mon Amour!

Annual Trail Rides: 50/200 A nice time to hit our 25% trail objective. We finally got access to the trails (walking only) and it has been absolutely delightful. Ive also been using these slower rides to be social and go out with boarder friends, and that also has been delightful! Q was a delight on our first time out, as steady as an old cow pony. But yesterday on the way home he reminded me that the dragon needs tending. Navigating through icy patches between trees where the obvious path for Q is to hug the trees where the ice has melted, but that means my knees go knocking into the bark. So I picked up the reins to navigate better and he got fired up. All of a sudden his sides were on fire, and any heat from my leg prompted him into a trot. Which is not what you want on slick ice. So I stopped him. And we would start all over again. This happened 12 times on the last 1 km stretch home. Not fun. After some reflection, I realized that we were in a 12 rabbit situation.
