End of the year

-

Seems fitting to end the year of confinement and hibernation with a month of summertime sunshine and sunsets. Q is on vacation too, but getting the occasional grooming so he doesn’t turn feral. 5 weeks of bliss and then its back to winter.

Had a lovely solo ride in the beautiful woods. The tree leaves were so green from the morning rain that I thought it was neon. Because our trails are mostly sandy loam, they dry up real quick and we don’t have much to worry about in rocks, stumps, or mud.  Q was a great partner and let me know when he wanted to go faster. Nothing obnoxious, but a bit more bounce in his step and his ears would speak volumes. It was lovely to be just the two of us, and he was smooth as silk cantering down the path. A busy week ahead with too much work, and not enough barn time. Happy trails to all.

Annual Trail Rides: 71/200 A slow week as I was bedridden for 5 days. I finally made it to the barn on the 6th day in the pouring rain and I groomed my beautiful horse to a shine. By the 7th day I tacked up, with a bit of trepidation and went for a ride. I kept the reins on the buckle and chose to trust my horse, and boy did he deliver! We had lovely trots and canters amidst the walkers and Q charmed the pants over everybody that stopped to talk with us. I tell his budding fanclub to hold their hands out like a plate and he proceeds to licking them. Yesterday a lovely lady who was completely enamored, started backing away and Q kept following her for one more lick. She was in love. Ive finished my third Rashid book, and I absorbed the lesson of lightness vs softness, and the importance of joy. Yesterday I was filled with joy, patting and scratching his neck everytime he guessed my intentions right.  My horse was the right prescription for my day.

Itchy Tail

Annual Trail Rides: 94/200 Lots of cool riding these days, as temperatures are below normal. Skies are blue, forests are green, but it is a daily challenge to figure out how many layers to put on. Temperatures shift 10C degrees between shade and sun, so in part in depends on where you plan to ride. Q has been acting a little weird in the backend. He started by pooping in his water bowl a few weeks ago. He did it again last week. And then he was observed sitting on the fence. Yes, sitting. Today, he was sitting in the water bowl in the outside paddock. So he got another tail bath, and I covered his tail in green listerine. It seems like the itchiness is coming from the base of his tail, and not the more common top of the tail. I scrubbed the tailbone quite thoroughly, and even washed it twice (and rinsed very thoroughly). However, Im wondering if perhaps the problem is actually not in his tail? Maybe he has a bean in his sheath? And his discomfort is having him behave unusually?

I fell at a walk. My horse took off as I was screaming obscenities at the nearby dogwalker that let her dog chase us through the bush. Unleashed of course. My horse didn’t get very far as he stood twenty feet away from me, watching me with both eyes. The seconds before the fall are very blurry. I remember seeing the dog walker at a distance, but didn’t think anything of it. Then I heard the dog tearing through the bush to get us, the horse we were following bolted off, and I was not paying attention as I was putting on my gloves. My horse spun 180 degrees and literally left me hanging into a dead pine tree. I hit the ground fast but not so fast that I didnt shout six or seven swear words before my back hit the branches on the ground. I think my horse was spooked at his buddy bolting off, and all my screaming and swearing. I was so angry. But I do learn an important lesson every time I fall. Lately my lessons have been about my lack of awareness and my taking my horse for granted. On th...

Back home and winter is here!

The joys of shorts, sandals, blue skies and bright yellow sun for 18+ hours a day are over. We returned last week after a 24 hour monstrous return, without our baggage because thats the lingering issue of the day in the airline industry, and with a tickle in my throat. 3 days of suffering later, our bags showed up and I finally made it to the barn. Q’s reaction was priceless. As soon as he heard my voice, he flipped around, head in the air and seemed to say: « waiiiit … WHAT??? … where YOU been? » and proceeded to grope me with his nose. He was hot to trot and our first ride out was a bit edgy. We secured some babysitters from the barn to take us out on trail in what was some of the most beautiful winter wonderland. We kept it at a walk those first two days cuz Q was ready to bolt with excitement. Then I played hookie and ran out to the barn early in the morning to see what he had under the hood. Alone and without fear for any other riders or trail users, we tested Q’s energy and self ...
