End of the year

Seems fitting to end the year of confinement and hibernation with a month of summertime sunshine and sunsets. Q is on vacation too, but getting the occasional grooming so he doesn’t turn feral. 5 weeks of bliss and then its back to winter.

That split second decision

That split second, after your horse has spooked, dropped and spun … when you are unseated but still are able to pull up the reins (partly for balance), when the horse could continue with a bolt, buck, or more spinning … but instead, in that split second, the horse makes the good choice. Ears back on you, head up, as you rebalance on his back, waiting. And then the horse proceeds to turn back on the trail and continue almost as if nothing happened (even if said horse is feeling a little “light” in the feet). As soon as I rebalanced myself, I let out a big YOUPPI in celebration for Qs maturity and good choices in challenging circumstances. Feeling strong

Milestone rides this week on back to back days. 4 hours each, walking 100%. The lack of recovery time is a real thing and Im glad Im working specifically on this. Ive now passed the hump of my insecurity and am feeling pretty confident that no amateur rider doing this trip is as prepared. They may be lighter, fitter, younger ... but I can not believe anybody has put in the time I have for 4 weeks (and 2 more weeks to go) to mentally and physically prepare themselves for the gruelling and taxing impact of very long hours in the saddle at a walk. I am surprised at how taxing a long walk is. I have been regularly riding 4-5 times a week at WTC for 1-2 hours each ride for several years now. But just walking is something else. First of all, its incredibly boring and your mind really needs to find a different frequency. Busting Out!

In 10 weeks we will be going somewhere. We haven’t yet decided where, and of course we aren’t 100% in control. But somewhere, anywhere, will be where we are. Its fun and exciting to plan adventures to places you know nothing about. With everything at my fingertips it makes for accessible amounts of information that is also overwhelming. Analysis paralysis anyone? Q tossed his neck at me. A first, as we approach our 6th Gotchya and Bday anniversary. And our fifth year of riding bliss. Now in hindsight I am confidently able to express my utter gratitude at how easy Q was to start under saddle. For years I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, and so I would never say (for fear of jinxing myself and some terrible, potentially deadly accident to happen) how reliable a horse he had become. Qs reliability has very little to do with my skill, and much more to do with our connection, bond and mutual trust. He is very cued in to me, and Im usually very cued in to him. I think, maybe, although I hate to jinx it, that perhaps Q has become my “steady eddy”. Yes, yes, there was that moment back in June when he was a hot tamale and I didn’t want to canter on trail because I couldn’t control his spooking trot. And, yes, he was a little bouncy on those recent days when the temperature dipped. But, boy, was he just a delight to ride today, on a 3 hour tour of a nearby sector. We paired up with a lovely pal C with her Lusitano cross mare just recently recovered from a laminitis episode that took a year to heal. The mare was obese, but now is looking mighty svelte as she dropped 200 pounds, and now has her hay weighed every day. Owners of easykeepers: keep the weight down. 👀  The mare was a bit looky/spooky and struggled to lead, but C kept trying, so Q and I switched around as she needed. Down the street

Still working on my walking mileage as I prepare my body for my trek in Patagonia. Im feeling stronger with 9/10 km in a single stretch but find that I need day after recovery time, usually with some strong discomfort around my rib cage. 🤷‍♀️ Ive also done two 14 km mountain stretches with very difficult terrain, but I usually struggle in the last hour and find that Im wiped out after those walks. So on days where I cant commit to a barn commute or bigger endeavour, Ive taken to exploring the beauty of my neighborhood just down the street. We live in the waterfront area of Montreal on the St Laurence River where the rapids take over. Ive found the eternal surfing spot, and some cool little riverside paths. Its a beautiful park about 20km long and when the sun is shining there is no better place to be.
