The volunteers were busy busy yesterday clearing the debris from the trails. We had some glorious outings even if the weather dropped to -10C. The snow hardened making for crunchy footing and stabilizing the trees. Just another day in our winter wonderland.

Itchy Tail

Annual Trail Rides: 94/200 Lots of cool riding these days, as temperatures are below normal. Skies are blue, forests are green, but it is a daily challenge to figure out how many layers to put on. Temperatures shift 10C degrees between shade and sun, so in part in depends on where you plan to ride. Q has been acting a little weird in the backend. He started by pooping in his water bowl a few weeks ago. He did it again last week. And then he was observed sitting on the fence. Yes, sitting. Today, he was sitting in the water bowl in the outside paddock. So he got another tail bath, and I covered his tail in green listerine. It seems like the itchiness is coming from the base of his tail, and not the more common top of the tail. I scrubbed the tailbone quite thoroughly, and even washed it twice (and rinsed very thoroughly). However, Im wondering if perhaps the problem is actually not in his tail? Maybe he has a bean in his sheath? And his discomfort is having him behave unusually?

Walk in the woods

Being at the barn today was like putting on my favorite old pair of slippers. Chat, groom, chat some more. So wonderful to see my good friends again. Q was a bit aloof, as he usually is after some absence. The best remedy is to just hang out, no pressure, and let him observe me from a comfortable distance. Eventually he comes in for the cuddles and safety. I decided to go for a stroll in the woods and Q was happy to comply after being so sheltered for five weeks. We slowly walked and got back into sync. A tree fell nearby, he spooked then looked at me, dropped his head and sighed. Much licking of lips. Am I not supposed to be in front? Ok, I follow you! Surprisingly still spring with sparse leaves. See you again soon! Trail ride plans coming shortly. For the most part, our walk was quiet and soothing. Does this work on humans?

After four days of despooking clinic and some reflection time, I want to share my broader perspective on what despooking can teach us. Only humans dwell - sometimes you just need to go with the flow. Horses have wonderful lessons to teach us in this regard. Their desire to be one with the herd, to establish hierarchy and rules, and to be in the present moment forces us to reconsider our thoughts and actions. Being such generous and forgiving souls, horses begin every moment as a new one. They dont dwell on past issues, they dont cry over lost relationships, they dont get angry over spilled milk. They lock in to their surroundings, feel their environment, find the path that leads to safety and grass. They are fluid. Let us learn to connect with the “herd”. Dont focus on the obstacle, focus on what you are doing. Obstacles are everywhere, physical and psychological. Quaint Krakow

We arrived in Krakow on a super short commuter flight from Budapest and spent most of the weekend wandering about the charming town, constantly watching out for rogue trams that want to run us over. Our first afternoon was a delightful stop in the large market square to sit on a terrace, drink local beer, eat a lovely plate of cured sausages and meats with a kickass fresh horseradish purée, and watch the parade go by on National Constitution Day. Somehow, we often arrive in a new city on their national holiday. Krakow town square and basilica In the town square, m any fine carriages and horses are in line, with beautiful women in black hats with white ribbons driving the carriages. Its so unusual to see only women driving so many large carriages, that I took notice. At first, I thought it was because of the parade. Sweaty eyeballs

One fine morning with blue skies and sunshine we set out to do some canter work in the outdoor ring. We started with a five minute warm-up walk, a few minutes of trotting serpentines, and then did 10 minutes of 30m canter circles with simple changes, reverse loops, and some halt-canter-halt and walk-canter-walk transitions. By the end I was sweaty, thirsty and exhausted. My back was in spasms. We occasionally took a one minute break to do some trail obstacles like the bridge and balancing beam, but we mostly cantered with a few hand gallops thrown in. It all lasted less than 30 minutes. I then proceeded to do a cool-down short trail and check the dragons energy. Lo and behold, the dragon was not quite tame. He still proceeded to sprint down the trail. So we kept on trotting and cantering and about ten minutes later he finally chilled out.  The dragon was tamed. But it took my back two days to recover.
