First Snow

Surprise! Surprise! 

A bit early this year, but perhaps a sign that we might have a Green Christmas … because irony. Horse was way too spicy than he should have been, so we kept it to a long distance trot in mostly sandy tracks. Twas a good one. Such a good egg.

    When I was a kid having snow at Halloween was not unusual. These days it feels wrong.

This was my first Secret Santa experience having experienced it vicariously through Teresa at Journey with a Dancing Horse last year . So when I saw the announcement floating through the blogland last month I jumped on the opportunity.  I was tickled pink to come home this week to a big box filled with very important things for our nordic winters. My secret santa was Alaina at Alberta Equest and she knows a thing or two about winter.  A beautiful hand-made and closed loop (this is so important for us nordic riders!) scarf in Qs color of blue (and it matches his saddle pad), a bag of yummy horsetreats made by the Gheeky Chesnut, and a cozy keyhole quartersheet for those days when the mercury drops to -20 degrees (this happened twice this week). Coviditis, the cure for

 Coviditis = general anxiety expressed as anger, impatience and disproportionate reactions to benign events. Often experienced in parallel to much time spent on social media or digesting current political events. The cure is to saddle up and ride. Time spent in the woods with a great equine partner and dozens of walkers gushing over your beautiful well-mannered horse as they ask to take your picture, is the perfect balm. So many happy people, and every once in a while I give them a peppermint to give Q. He loves that! Winter is coming, with warnings of our first storm to appear tomorrow. Im planning on locking myself into my house once the freezing rain begins until the sun comes out. So I, and the walkers, took in every ounce of sunshine present today.

Section 4, Le Grand Tour

The weather was so pleasant today that we did the big loop from section 2, through section 3, and section 4. Its about a 20 km loop that took us 3 hours to do. I had water bottles, an apple, my phone, and a few peppermints for Q. The first 30 minutes was solo as I went to pick up trail buddy C with her azteca mare. Much of section 4 is on gravel residential roads, or on trails next to residential homes with pools, trampolines, treehouses, and all kinds of stuff sitting in someones backyard. Its a good test for how desensitized your horse is. Q was awesome, occasionally trembling when a dog lunged at us but quick to get settled again. Lots of pretty homes and horsefarms in this neighborhood, and very polite drivers. We got to visit lots of backyards and gardens. Trail is on the right. Oh and it must have been garbage day! Despooking Clinic, Second Edition

Day 1 of the second edition, this time with 16 horses. Aside from the first hour of craziness, things proceeded in an orderly fashion and it IS possible to have so many horses in a tight space with multiple obstacles. Makes you go hmmm. In the first hour, after being fussed over with pool noodles and pom poms, the horses very quickly progressed from the scariness of the first plywood plank to the multiple obstacles including the combo tarp over mattress with the funny squishy sounds. Funny, so many horses had issues  with the bubbles. Nobody thought the dancing man would be possible when they started. Now look, calmly proceeding as a herd.

When my legs say GO but my butt says NO

Q struggles with tires, balls, tarps and all objects that are unnatural. He is not a big fan of plastic bags but since carrots come in plastic bags he has learned to be more curious than fearful. Back in 2016, when we were starting out with groundwork I was convinced he could plow through a set of old tires just like the Missouri Foxtrotters do. We tried but we had more fails than success, and then I got distracted by the next shiny thing. So we never mastered tires. Certainly not like this pretty mare at minute 3:42. Amazing! And backwards 😱! So when I came into the ring one day and saw a short stack of tires, I thought “cool, lets see what what Q thinks about that”! He was a little “looky” that day as there were many new obstacles around and the barn crew was replacing the gate with a set of powertools.
